Basic Plot:
The Forgotten Garden by Kate Morton follows the journey of a 4 year-old girl found abandoned on a dock in Australia with no memory of anything as to where she came from, her parents, or her name. The dock master and his wife "adopt" the girl and name her Nell; even after a letter comes from a private investigator looking for the little girl. On Nell's 21st birthday, her father tells her the truth about who she is. Nell is enraged by the news and cuts off all ties to her past life, including her fiance, sisters, home, ect. Nell eventually goes on a quest to discover who she really is, but is interrupted by her daughter leaving Nell's granddaughter, Cassandra, before she can complete her quest. In 2005, Nell dies, and Cassandra receives a strange inheritance of a cottage in England; which sends her on an incredible journey to discover Nell's past.
My Thoughts:
Overall, I loved The Forgotten Garden and found it both interesting and creative, although I had to force myself through the first 300 pages of it...
I found the ending very predictable but I really enjoyed how it was written. The story was told from three different character: Nell (while she was on her quest to discover who she really was), Cassandra (while finishing Nell's quest), and from Eliza Makepeace (A children's fairy tale writer from the ealy 1900's). Of course, as many books written in this writing style, all of the characters and their own plot lines are connected in the end.
